“When I was a student at Cambridge I remember an anthropology professor holding up a picture of a bone with 28 incisions carved in it. “This is often considered to be man’s first attempt at a calendar,” she explained. She paused as we dutifully wrote this down. “My question to you is this – what man needs to mark 28 days? I would suggest to you that this is woman’s first attempt at a calendar.”
It was a moment that changed my life. In that second I stopped to question almost everything I had been taught about the past. How often had I overlooked women’s contributions? How often had I sped past them as I learned of male achievement and men’s place in the history books? Then I read Rosalind Miles’s book “The Women’s History of the World” (recently republished as “Who Cooked the Last Supper?”) and I knew I needed to look again. History is full of fabulous females who have been systematically ignored, forgotten or simply written out of the records. They’re not all saints, they’re not all geniuses, but they do deserve remembering.”

A classic Caitlin meal. Avocado and tomato on toast. I’ve started using pesto as well, just to add a bit of flavor, especially since I’ve been having this for dinner more so recently and feel that dinners need to be a little bit more exciting, right? It’s just so. fucking. good. Hence why, instead of using actually pieces of toasts, I’ve been purchasing bread more on the loaf end of the scale, so as to better truly stuff my face with this gloriousness.

This is not how I had envisioned my night going, a fruit-filled feast in front of my computer (and fan), but things just didn’t totally pan out how I thought they would. I woke up to another hot, hot day here in Melbourne and had a bit of a manic morning. High on life I got out of bed, turned on some Beyonce, and cleaned the entire first floor of my house, mopping, toilet scrubbing and all. Went to the gym, had a great, sweaty workout, bought groceries, came home, showered, started sweating again as soon as I was out, of course, made a salad, watched Girls, bla bla bla ran some errands and then BOOM, mood crash, so tired, back home, took off my clothes, got on my bed pointed the fan at myself and read/napped for about 4 hours. Energy = gone. I was meant to go hang at my friend’s new place but that fell through because they didn’t end up having their power successfully connected, then was meant to have some of my New Zealand boys come over for beers and burgers, but then they took forever and the restaurant we were planning to go to ends up not being open on Tuesdays, so alas, alone at 10pm I decide to go back to the supermarket and stock up on the above ingredients to fill my tummy before bed with one of the greatest combinations of food of all time. Yum.
